The garbage disposal is one of the kitchen appliances that is used the most.  It effectively gets rid of all the food waste while being neatly tucked and hidden under the kitchen sink.

However, disposing of these scraps can cause a breeding ground for bacteria.  Some of the food can get caught in the grinder, causing food to sit and decay.

Luckily, it is very easy to naturally clean your garbage disposal and chances are you have everything you need sitting in your pantry.

What You Need:

  • Vinegar

  • Baking Soda

  • Salt

  • Ice

  • Lemon Peels

What To Do:

How to clean a garbage disposal

Pour ½ cup of baking soda into your garbage disposal and let sit for an hour.  Then pour in 1 cup of vinegar.  This combination will cause a fizz to occur which is actually cleaning all the food residue and bacteria.  Let this fizz continue for three minutes and then rinse it down with hot water from your faucet.

Next, if you want to clean the blades you will need to pour in two cups of ice and top it off with one cup of salt.  Turn on the cold water and the disposal and let it run until all the ice has been ground up.

Lastly, you will want to add the peel of a lemon and put it down the drain.  Run cold water and turn on the garbage disposal until the citrus peel is all ground up.

Why This Works:

The reaction that occurs when vinegar and baking soda are combined creates a powerful chemical free cleaning agent that will clean and disinfect your disposal.  Adding in the ice and salt creates a powerful scrub that will remove any excess food debris.  The citrus peel is the final step and will deodorize the garbage disposal leaving behind a wonderful citrus scent
